Market newsletter 8th July 2010
Welcome to this week's newsletter!

As many of our customers will be taking some much deserved time off during July and August, we are making a special appeal to you to come along and support the market when you are around on a Saturday. It will mean a lot to our producers and suppliers to have a steady trade during the traditionally slower summer months.
Thanks to all of you who donated books to us last Saturday – the bookshelves were certainly replenished, although plenty of room for more if you have any. You’ll be able to pick up some great holiday reads here on Sat, and know that its going to a good cause.
Events

Slow Food is a grass-roots food organisation set up some thirty years ago to counteract the then emerging fast food culture, and it is now a strong world-wide organisation. The Dublin Branch has been fairly inactive until recently, when a new Committee was formed. As I have recently joined this Committee, you’ll now be hearing about the food events that are being planned for the coming months – with the first one planned for next Tuesday, details of location etc on our website here. It is a fun food quiz, with prizes and raffle, and only costs €2.50 per person. If you would like to participate, you can come along and join a team or bring three others with you on the night to form your own team. Contact email is slowfooddublin@gmail.com

Wine Stall specials of the week – Colm is looking to extend your taste experiences again with the wines on tasting this Saturday, with the following:
Montalto Grillo/Sauvignon, IGT Sicilia 2008: A lovely blend of the indigenous Grillo that lends texture to the aromas of Sauvignon. Another great wine from this award winning estate, normal price €9.99 down to €8.50
Caballero Mendoza, Roble Ribera Del Duero, 2006: Dark fruits, coffee bean and chocolate amongst the flavours for this complex and smooth belter from Spains stellar region. Usually €16, down to €13.50 for this week only.
Pascale from Phoenix Delites will be bringing along her Phoenix Delite real Handmade Belgian cocoa truffles to the market again on Saturday. The best way to enjoy these truffles is to open the box, smell the beautiful aroma of the real cocoa and take 1 out of the box and enjoy it with a nice cup of coffee (Ariosa for preference!).
Veggie stall – Sheila tells me that she wont have many herbs on Saturday, but will have lots of in-season vegetables, such as new season cauliflower & broccoli grown by Dennis Harford, green beans (try them lightly steamed and then dressed with a yogurt, garlic and mint dressing!) and strawberries from Thomas Hickey.
The Spud Man will have some fresh new potatoes available from Hattons in Wexford; and as these are the next wave of spuds, they will be even more floury and the price will be down from €2 to €1.50 per kilo. He will also have more seasonal raspberries from Wexford, and we will more organic vegetables, including broccoli, salad leaves, spinach, cabbage and scallions all from Paddy Byrnes organic farm near Skerries. There will even be a few more duck eggs for sale.

Jam-making fruit availability
If you are interested in getting some fruit for jam making, please email or phone before lunchtime tomorrow (Friday). Paddy will be collecting produce in Wexford in the early afternoon, and if he has your contact details he will phone you to let you know the price that he will be able to negotiate. His number is 087-2542549, or you can email me at brid@honest2goodness.ie. He thinks that he should be able to get strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and gooseberries.
Café news: Our specials on Saturday will be Spicy Indian Lamb (that old favourite to ward off the likely wet day!), salad will be chicken and roast vegetable pasta (made with wholemeal spelt flour) and we will have more of our mini quiches and salad. We will also be serving our very popular toasties, and we will have some more fresh spiced gooseberry relish to go with the ham and cheese option (made from organic gooseberries from Paddy Byrnes farm).
Pantry
We got our first delivery of Govenders Indian produce last week and it went down very well at its first tasting. The chilli pickles will be on tasting again on Saturday.
This week we are also lightening things up with tastes of our fresh orange juice, smoothies and yogurts, which we source from Wild Orchard in Limerick. As many of our customers have been saying that they are on a healthy eating regime (aka a diet) we wanted to show you that these are very delicious tasting, very low in calories and fat (yogurt has less than 4% fat) and with no additives or preservatives.
We will also be telling you how to use yogurt as a really low-fat alternative to mayonnaise and cream and how you can create delicious meals based on this great Irish produce, which we source from Killowen in Wexford. And of course, Moonshine Farm have their lovely organic yogurt available in plain and with various fruits. As we also use the yogurt in our health loaf, made from spelt flour, we have this on tasting as well.
As usual, please forward the newsletter to your friends, and let us know if you want to be added to the circulation list.
