Market Newsletter 9th September 2010

Welcome to this week's newsletter, and there is definitely more than a hint of Autumn in the air this week. The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is inexorably heading towards us! At the market, we are planning to re-organise between now and early October (interrupted by a week in Italy to celebrate a certain recent birthday!), so bear with us while we do all that - we'll keep you posted on what is happening. All good stuff I promise!

 Honest2Goodness FOOD HEROES competition

We are inviting all our market community and beyond to take part in our Food Heroes competition to find our top 3 food heroes. Nominees can be artisan food or wine producers (wines must be available in Ireland), sourcers of good food/wine, stallholders at Honest2Goodness Farmers Market or any other market in Dublin or elsewhere in Ireland. The nominees can also include food bloggers, chefs, cooks, mainstream food writers or simply people who are passionate about their food.

Alongside the ‘Food Heroes’ campaign is a ‘best food product’ competition, where people are being asked to nominate their personal choice of a ‘best food or wine’. The wine or food must be available in Ireland.

We are finalising our online survey at the moment, and we'll let you know the details early next week. The first part is to get the nominees, and then we'll be getting people to vote for their own favourites from the nominations, with the results to be announced at a special market we'll be running on Saturday 16th of Oct 2010

Stallholder news this week:

All stallholders due to be at the market on Saturday, but please check on the website for any last minute changes.

Moonshine Farm: Mary Kelly tells me that they will have lots of their yogurt drinks (strawberry or blueberry) available on Saturday at €2 each or 3 for €5. They have also been busy making some of their cream cheese (once you taste this you'll never settle for Philadelphia again!), and this is available at €4 for 300g.

The Spud Man will have more of his late-summer soft fruits this Saturday, including strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Find out more about how to freeze blueberries here, and let us know if you want the Spud Man to keep you some for Saturday.

Wines of the week: To celebrate the delivery of a new consignment of wine from our suppliers in Italy - Castello di Querceto. They have been supplying us with our Chianti wines for some time now, and we are now stocking a white wine called Vernaccia Di San Gimignano (Colm is practicing how to get people to pronounce that on Saturday!. The wine's flavours include tropical fruit with lemon and almond also featuring. Its usual price is €12.50, on sale on Saturday for €10.62.

For our red wine offering we have our Chianti, with its distinctive blue label. You can read more about it here, and its on sale for an amazing price of €9.99 on Saturday.

Cafe news: The hot dish of the day this Saturday is Chilli Con Carne, which uses dark chocolate in the recipe, available here. We will be using Phoenix Delites 80% chocolate for the dish, as it needs the dark chocolate and high % cocoa content to work properly.

We also going a bit bananas and plan to have our healthy banana and blueberry loaf available by the slice, and on tasting at the Tasting Table. You can check out that recipe here if you feel like making your own!
