Market Cafe Event - this Saturday

Cartoon from the Weston A Price Foundation website

(in the cafe at 2pm) we will have a presentation by Kevin Eakins on RAW MILK, a traditional Irish product that has been the subject of major controversy over the last year or so, Kevin will be basing his talk on the work of the Weston A Price Foundation. Joining us will be David Tiernan, Farmer & Cheese Maker, who supplies the market with raw milk each week (available at the Pantry/Cheese Satll). There will be the opportunity to try out raw milk, pasturised organic milk and plain old 'supermarket milk' to see if anyone can taste the difference! All milk lovers welcome. David's lovely Glebe Brethan cheese will also be available to taste.

On the 29th of September we will have one of our occasional Craft Days.

Stallholder news:

Shaping up to be a busy day this Saturday as almost everyone will be with us, except The Big Red Kitchen who wont be at the market this Saturday. We are delighted to announce that both the Big Red Kitchen and Sheaffoods have been shortlisted for the Blas na hEireann 2012 awards, with the finals taking place on the weekend of the 5th of October - we wish them the best of luck!

Wasnt there lots of excitement last Saturday with the UTV Film crew around the market - they spent most of the day with us, filming The Wild Flour Bakery in action!

Peter of WholeHoggs tells me that they will have lots more pork with them this Sat, and also their new (uncooked) chorizo, which I tasted at the market on Wednesday. The taste and texture of the sausage is really fab, although you have been warned that there is quite a kick from it! If you would like to reserve any pork ahead of Saturday, phone Susan at 086-8147459. With the start of the Autumn Game Season upon us, Peter is hoping to bring new wild game meats to the market over the coming weeks. However, as it is all down to what is available in the wilds of Co Meath, he cant say yet what will be available on Saturday, so you will just have to check out the stall on Saturday.

The Fruit & Veg stall is getting a make-over this week, as Paddy and Andrew spruce up their layout - they will be very upset if you dont comment & admire it on Saturday!

At the Pantry, we are finalising this month's order for specialised flours, seeds, beans and other healthy options; if there is anything in particular you would like us to include on the list, please let us know, either by email or at the market on Saturday. We would be delighted to give tours of the foods in the Pantry to customers at any time!

In the cafe our dish of the day will be an Italian red wine and lamb casserole, served with mashed potato. And soup will be back on the menu, with an Autumn Vegetable soup on the go.

On the wine front, we were delighted to be featured in last Saturday's Irish Times Wine Column, with our Legus wine from the Bierzo region of Spain (made from the local Mencia grape), but  you will have to wait til Saturday to know what wines will be on special offer, as Colm & Hakan are out and about til tomorrow!

Hope to see you on Saturday!
Brid & all the team at Honest2Goodness

Market Community News

This is where any of our customers can send us in any information which might be of interest to the broader Market Community - ideas for bartering, exchanges, local events, fund-raising activities - anything at all really!

A couple of people said to me on Saturday that they would like to include items in this Section of the newsletter - however, I didnt get any details since, so PLEASE make sure that you let me know by lunchtime on a Thursday for inclusion in the newsletter...

We've included the Regan family's notice again this week - who have this fab house to rent in West Cork (see picture below). You can find out more on their website here Ask at the Pantry for contact details or you can get in touch via their website. The place looks absolutely fab, and I for one will be planning a few days (or a few weeks there) sometime soon.

We were also contacted by a new local Health Centre called HealthReach (you can read more about them on their website here) who are based near St Peter's Church and who are doing a special offer on health-screening this month - it being Healthy Heart Month, including a free blood-pressure check. So get in touch with them for more info...
