Honest2Goodness Market Newsletter July 14th 2011

Hello from Honest2Goodness Market. Hope you've had the chance to enjoy the brief spell of fine weather we've had this week.

The weather forecast for the weekend isnt good, although as I am writing this, it is still a lovely day out there!  It will rain before the day is out I think... perfect weather for getting a Curry Sauce Co medium spicy sauce this weekend, and adding it to some of Jim Ryan's chicken breasts! Which is funny really, given that Indians eat curries on the hottest of days, as their theory (and they are the experts!) is that it helps to cool the body

We'll be here, business as usual on Saturday from 9.30 til 4 pm. As of now, all stallholders are due to be here on Saturday; you can check the website on Saturday for any last minute changes.

Dominic from Gleann Gabhra apologises again for last Saturday. One of his main milk-holding fridges broke down overnight on Friday night, so his milk couldnt be sold. He tells me that all is now well with the fridge, so he expects to be here on Saturday.

Rosie will have her own organic bunched baby carrots, cucumbers and new season brocolli on Saturday.

The Spud Man is just back from Wexford, where he picked up lots of lovely berry fruits - including his own favourite of Blackberries! - from GreenHill Fruit Farm outside Enniscorthy. They grow all their fruit in the traditional manner of in the soil, and then cover the plants against the elements and to promote berry growth. He also got some new season honey from Percy.

New potatoes baked in a little olive oil in a hot oven for 15 minutes, tossed with some garlic and a little fresh rosemary and finished off for another 5 minutes...mmmm

Jim Ryan has now finalised his own black and white puddings and will have them at the market on Saturday. The cafe will be doing a breakfast special of your choice of puddings with plum tomato on your choice of our freshly-baked breads. Jim is also doing a special on bacon joints this Saturday - 1kg joint for €5.

Breanndan's Pizza special this week sounds great -

'Rio Grande' - Chicken Fajita with seared peppers and onions on salsa base. Topped with melted cheddar, sour cream and fresh coriander.

Thanks for all the compliments on the fish chowder/stew that we had at the cafe last Saturday, and yes, I will get around to writing up the recipe.I used a lovely fish mix that Johnny did - here is the photo of it! And not forgetting the last minute addition of mussels to add a different texture and interest.

So, flushed with the success of the one-pot lunch last week, I am going for a second such option this weekend, but with lamb, red wine, herbs, garlic and new potatoes. It will be a more substantial dish of course with the lamb, but with the weather forecast being what it is, it'll be welcome...

Otherwise in the cafe, we will have more of the market-kitchen scones - almond & raisin and if we have time, we'll try for a second type! Caryna's carrot cake went down so well last week that we have asked her to do us another one for this Saturday...

Business as usual at the Pantry on Saturday; all cheeses in stock, with Glebe Brethan due with the raw milk on Saturday morning; Paris Bakery breads on order,  Burkes Farm ice-cream in the freezer, and lots more!

Ah the power of it! I get to choose the Wines of the Week this week, so I am going for two wines offering great value...

The white wine of the week is from Dominio de la Vega, their Anacal, made from 100% Maccabeo, which gives a light, fresh wine with lots of summer fruits, very peachy! Usually priced at €10, we have it on offer on Saturday for €8.50

On the red wine front, I have gone for an Italian wine from Chianti - the i Colombi made from Sangiovese grape, by Castello di Querceto. This wine won and award at the International Wine Challenge 2011, and is a great value wine at its normal price of €10, so even better value this Saturday at €8.50! It is a fresh and fruity wine, with light tannins, perfect summer drinking...
